This is a lovely piece produced by the C.G. Schierholz & Son porcelain factory in Plaue, Germany--one of several famous manufacturers in the Thuringia region. This piece comes in two parts--an organically scultped, leaflike bowl, and lid that fits snugly inside. The lid is most impressive, adorned with hand sculpted blue springtime blossoms interspersed with pink and yellow roses. A winged cherub sits in the middle of this floral tuffet, playing upon his lyre. One of the most fantastic aspects of this piece is the detailed impressed designs of the dish, swirling scrolls that branch apart and rejoin into intricate patterns reminiscent of the arabesques of a Persian rug. A similar starburst pattern can be found beneath the cherub-handled lid. The edge is sprayed lightly in a gold glaze, and the piece sits upon three scrolled foots at the bottom.
